The modern OBOE is about 300 years old, although it can be traced back to ancient instruments. Its body is made from Ebony or Rosewood, like the clarinet, and is similarly fitted with a system of keys and levers. The oboe utilizes a double reed system to produce the tone. The tiny mouthpiece consists of two small reeds that are intricately thinned, shaved and wound together with string, then inserted in the small end of the instrument. The Oboist does not blow into the instrument, but rather allows air to escape through the mouthpiece, with some pressure, to produce the hypnotic exotic, tone. Orchestras tune to the oboe because very little mechanical adjustment can be made to change the pitch of the instrument…technique and the careful making of the reeds are required for good intonation.
