The VIOLIN is the smallest of the orchestral stringed instruments. It is made from about 70 carefully shaped pieces of various kinds of wood - maple, sycamore, ebony, pine, and pear wood. The quality of the violin's tone can vary depending on which woods are chosen and the chemical formulas of the glues and varnishes used. It is played by pulling the bow across 4 strings that are tuned in a series of perfect fifths. The strings vibrate to produce the sound. The unique shape of the violin body and the size of the "f holes" serve as sound amplifiers and can affect the sound quality. Bowing technique results in differences in volume, smoothness, or shortness of notes in a passage. The strings can also be plucked with the fingers rather than bowed to produce short, pizzicato notes. It is a very expressive instrument.

Digital downloads of each pattern purchased consist of seven pages (8.5 x 11 inches), including four pages which when trimmed and taped together make the full-size (15 inches square) pattern master for doing the applique or embroidery method of your choosing. The download is in Adobe PDF format and you will need the free Adobe Reader software to print the pages.
